LAWSON LECTURE/Goldsboro

Bea Latham, who works for the Bath State Historic Site, will be the guest speaker at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Wayne County Museum, 116 N. William St. Latham will speak about the life of John Lawson, the first European to explore the interior of North Carolina, including the future Wayne County, in early 1701. Lawson’s ‘A New Voyage to Carolina,’ published in 1709, was the first study of this region’s geography, plants, animals and native people. This program is free and open to the public. For more information, call the museum at 919-734-5023.

TREE ID/Washington

Goose Creek State Park is offering a program at 2 p.m. Saturday to help participants learn how to identify trees without leaves on them. The program will include other clues that the tree has to offer to identify them during the winter. There will be a classroom and outdoor portion of Saturday’s program. Meet at the Visitor Center of the park, 2190 Camp Leach Road. For directions or more information, call 252-923-2191.

AMATEUR RADIO/Wilmington

The Azalea Coast Amateur Radio Club will operate from the Battleship North Carolina during the North Carolina QSO Party from noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. The purpose of this annual ‘Ham Radio’ event is to allow amateur radio operators worldwide to contact as many of North Carolina’s 100 counties as possible. This year, the Battleship is one of four stations worth ‘extra points’ if contacted. Licensed radio amateurs are invited throughout the year to be guest operators on the air from Radio Central using call sign N14BK. The club will communicate by voice through the ship’s original cabling and antennae. Morse code communications will originate from the TBM-4 transmitter, placed in service aboard the battleship in 1941, and restored to operating condition by club members in 2002, after a more than 50 year slumber.
