Friends of the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library proudly present Sunday afternoon jazz and blues with Chris Morden and Friends. The free concert will take place at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Acclaimed bassist Chris Morden plays Schechter Auditorium at the public library. He also brings area musicians, John van Dyke on vocals and Brandon Shamar on keys. Chris Morden and Friends will perform a collection of tunes that will take you on a musical journey. Morden returns to his jazz roots for this spectacular concert.

Morden has been teaching and performing music since 1995, touring the country with various jazz, rock, theatre and classical groups, including opening for national and international acts, and several recording projects. A multi-instrumentalist. Morden plays bass and sings with the popular North Carolina-based band, Spare Change, performing at festivals, concerts, weddings, events and nightclubs throughout the eastern United States.

John van Dyke has been headlining jazz concerts regularly in and around the Crystal Coast area.

For more than 25 years, he has been performing in clubs, cruise ships, and musical theatre in Miami, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Influenced at a young age by Billie Holiday, Lester Young, Louis Armstrong, and Sarah Vaughn, John loves Jazz standards. He also performs with a lot of R&B, classic Rock & Roll and funk bands. Currently, he’s performing locally with a three- to six-piece combo, and working on his CD.

Brandon Shamar is a native of Rocky Mount. He comes from a family of musicians, starting at an early age to play keyboard. He soon became known in the area and participated in community and high school choirs. Shamar’s passion for music led him to the East Carolina University School of Music, where he studied jazz piano.

Sunday afternoon jazz and blues is a free event that is sure to have everyone singing, swinging, and bebopping with the music.
