Two churches will offer dramatizations of Jesus and his disciples’ last supper together, as worship opportunities during Holy Week.
Gordon Street Christian Church will present the program Palm Sunday evening, and the Faith Fellowship Church service will be in the evening on Good Friday.
Both re-enactments are based on Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting, “The Last Supper,” and both congregations invite the community to join them in their service.
Gordon Street’s evening of drama from the men of the church and special music from the sanctuary choir will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday in the sanctuary. The Christian dramatization brings to life through drama, dialogue and music the tension-filled moment when the disciples struggle with Jesus’ announcement that a betrayer is in their midst.
Each disciple proceeds to reflect on his life and journey with Christ and seeks the answer to their shared question, “Is it I?”
The presentation is an adaptation of an original drama written by the late minister and play-write, Ernest Emurian. The Rev. Emurian composed the drama in 1954 for local church productions in the Portsmouth, Va., area. Over the years, the production has continued to be recreated during Holy Week observances in countless churches.
Faith Fellowship’s dramatization will be at 7 p.m. March 29, also in the church sanctuary.
The re-enactment will focus on the moment when Jesus said to his disciples, “One of you will betray me.”
The drama will be accompanied by orchestral music compiled by Alan Armstrong, minister of music, who also will direct the presentation.
During the re-enactment, each disciple, one by one, will step forward to tell how he was brought to Christ and what he did to carry out the Master’s mission on earth. As he contemplates the possibility of himself being the betrayer, he takes his place at the table, “frozen” in the position captured by da Vinci.
The disciples will serve communion to the audience.
Both performances are open to the public free of charge.
