So much for a funky Thursday evening, at least one provided by a band with zydeco, Cajun vibes.
The Sand in the Streets concert set for tonight at Pearson Park has been postponed due to projected rain throughout the afternoon and evening.
“My nemesis has shown up again,” Adrian King said Wednesday after making the decision to postpone. King is executive director of Pride of Kinston, the downtown revitalization organization that sponsors the outdoor summer concert series.
“I have spoken with several area chief meteorologists and the weather word just is not good for Thursday night.”
The good word is that Mel Melton & The Wicked Mojos, the scheduled band, has been able to reschedule, and the concert is now set for Aug. 29.
“I’m pulling my hair out, but there is just nothing else to do but smile and keep trying,” King said. “This summer’s schedule has definitely had its meteorological challenges.”
The Suicide Blonde concert, rained out twice, will not be rescheduled. But the remaining groups — Spare Change Aug. 15 and Band of Oz Aug. 22 — will still hit the stage, weather permitting, as planned. Then the extra Aug. 29 concert will be the rescheduled Mel Melton performance from today’s original schedule.
Every year since 2004, Kinston’s business leadership has stepped forward to help Pride produce the outdoor concerts, 51 in total through the 2012 season. From the first, they have provided the economic backbone making the concerts possible. With four new ones added this year, the 2013 sponsor list in large measure mirrors the past, continuing the tradition of support from the business community.
