All this week, 34 children have experienced a “new twist” to the summer Performing Arts Camp offered by the Community Council for the Arts.
Two members of the Missoula Children’s Touring Theatre group from Missoula, Mont. — Amanda Tatum and Taylor Chew — were the week’s instructors and co-directors of the culminating performances set for Friday evening and Saturday afternoon at the arts center.
The campers spent the week learning theatre and stage techniques, and the public is invited to enjoy the fruits of their learned skills in the performances of “Beauty Lou and the Country Beast.” All campers will be participants in the performances at 6:30 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the arts center.
“It’s fun to watch them transform from campers to actors,” said Chew.
MCT is a highly professional touring theatre group whose motto is “helping kids reach a new stage.”
The children — ranging in age from 6 to 15 years old — were exposed to theatre techniques including make up, stage presence, vocalization and body movement. They also received experience in auditioning for parts in the play, given the variety of skill sets of the campers.
“Missoula Children’s Theatre has a long history of doing residencies and camps with children in theatre technique,” said Sandy Landis, executive director for the arts center. “This week we offered an alternate program for our performing arts camp and are thrilled with the leadership from Missoula Children’s Theatre.”
The performances are free and the public is encouraged to attend.
Exhibits of creations from other summer arts camps also are on display on the second level of the arts center. A public reception for these camps will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 21.
